Emma Stenning and Tom Morris

BOV Appoints New Directors

Bristol Old Vic has announced the appointment of Tom Morris as Artistic Director and Emma Stenning as Executive Director. They will take up their posts in September when they have fulfilled current commitments.

Cllr Simon Cook, chair of the selection panel, said, "The interest in these two posts has been huge. The selection process has been very thorough and we are delighted to have attracted such high calibre people to lead BOV."

Tom Morris is an Associate Director at the National Theatre where he has recently co-directed Every Good Boy Deserves Favour which completes its sold out NT run this week and Warhorse which is also sold out at the NT and moves to the West End at the end of March.

Emma Stenning is Head of Producing at the Manchester International Festival where she is producing several world premieres including Rufus Wainwright's debut opera Prima Donna.

Morris and Stenning, who last worked together as Artistic and Executive Directors at BAC (Battersea Arts Centre) said, "We are delighted to join the Bristol Old Vic at this unique moment in its history. Bristol has the most exquisite 18th Century playhouse in the country in an extraordinary, flexible and under-used building. Now, through the initiative of Dick Penny and board, the Old Vic feels ready to re-engage with the city as it did in the brightest moments in its past. The opportunity to rediscover the potential of this globally celebrated theatre in partnership with the people of Bristol is thrilling."

Chris Humphrey, Executive Director for Arts Council England South West, said, 'The appointment of Tom Morris as Artistic Director and Emma Stenning as Executive Director at the Bristol Old Vic is great news. The appointments mark a significant stage in the redevelopment of the theatre. Both Tom and Emma have exceptionally strong track records and bring with them the skills and expertise to innovate. We look forward to working with them in the future."

Dick Penny, Executive Chair, also announced that the company will be holding another Public Meeting at 6.00pm on Thursday 16 April to introduce Tom and Emma to Bristol and to share future plans. There will also be the chance to discuss the events of the last year which has seen BOV move from threatened closure in Jan 2008 to opening Catherine Johnson's new play Suspension on 27 February, 2009.
