Dateline: 13th October, 2005
Darcey Bussell is to retire from her position as Principal Dancer at the Royal Ballet at the end of the 2005/2006 season. "Making the decision to cease being a Principal of The Royal Ballet has not been easy for me," she says in a statement. "I am devoted to the Company and always will be. I am so fortunate to enter my 19th season in good health, feeling passionate and enthusiastic about my work. However, I have always wanted to end my full-time career still dancing the full classical repertoire at the standard to which I aspire." She wishes, she says, to spend more time with her young family: she has two daughters, aged 4 and 21 months. Bussell, who became the company's youngest Principal at the age of 20 and who is now 36, will, however, continue to work with the company as Principal Guest Artist from next season. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
