CATS Awards Winners 2006

The winners of the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) 2006 were announced yesterday (4th June) at a ceremony at Discovery Point Dundee. Six of the awards went to National Theatre of Scotland productions.

The winners were:

Best New Play

Best Actor (Male)
Liam Brennan as Odon von Horvath in Tales from Hollywood at Perth Theatre

Best Actor (Female)
Cara Kelly as Molly Sweeney in Molly Sweeney at The Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow

Best Design
Karen Tennant for Home: East Lothian
National Theatre of Scotland in partnership with Brunton Theatre and East Lothian Council

Best Use of Music
Hugh Nankivell for Home: Shetland
National Theatre of Scotland in partnership with Shetland Islands Council

Best Technical Presentation
Roam
National Theatre of Scotland/Grid Iron

Best Ensemble
Roam
National Theatre of Scotland/Grid Iron

Best Director
Gregory Thompson for Molly Sweeney at the Citizens’ Theatre

Best Production

All new theatre work produced in Scotland in the period 1st May 2005 – 30th April 2006 was eligible for the 2006 CATS Awards.

191 different, new productions that opened in the year were considered, of which 103 were new plays and 12 productions were aimed wholly at children under the age of 16.

The Awards Panel consisted of Mary Brennan (The Herald); Mark Brown (Sunday Herald/Daily Telegraph); Steve Cramer (The List); Shona Craven (s1play.com); Alan Chadwick (Metro Scotland); Neil Cooper (The Herald); Robert Dawson Scott (The Times); Thom Dibdin (Edinburgh Evening News/The Stage); Mark Fisher (Scotland on Sunday/The Guardian); Thelma Good (Edinburghguide.com); Sarah Jones (The Independent); Joyce McMillan (The Scotsman); and Joy Watters (Dundee Courier).
