The Customs House

Dateline: 28th April, 2004

NE Playwriting Competition

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of South Tyneside's premier arts and entertainment venue, The Customs House in South Shields is giving budding writers the opportunity to get their big break, by having their plays professionally produced and performed at the venue.

The Customs House has an enviable reputation for staging new drama, and our policy of promoting local writing by local playwrights continues to produce a brilliant array of plays.

As part of the 10th Anniversary celebrations at the venue, we will be hosting The Customs House 10th Anniversary New Comedy Writing Competition. We are looking for writers who have never had a play professionally performed before, to submit their work for judging by a panel of experts. The winning plays (in the age groups 16-25, 25-60, and 60+) will have their work performed as part of the venue's February Drama Festival in 2005.

Entrants must live or work in the North East - Cleveland, Co Durham, Northumberland, Teesside and Tyne and Wear.

The February Drama Festival has been running at the venue for the last four years, and this year saw three plays - I Left My Heart In Roker Park by Tom Kelly, Cake by Jen Brown and Chain by Peter Mortimer - attract audiences in their thousands.

The Customs House was opened in November 1994, and from November 2004, we will be playing host to a year of events to celebrate of 10th Anniversary. Theatre, cinema, visual arts and community activities will all be included in the festivities, which include special concerts and gala events.

Marketing Manager, Robin Byers says, "As we have shown at The Customs House, over previous years, there is some wonderful writing talent that exists in this region. We thought that giving new writers the opportunity to have their work professionally performed for the first time would be a terrific way to celebrate our Tenth Anniversary. And who knows? we may find the next Lee Hall or Alan Plater!"

Anyone from the North East wishing to take part in the The Customs House 10th Anniversary New Comedy Writing Competition should contact the Box Office for further details on 0191 4541234 or email mail@customshouse.co.uk
