Customs House Playwriting Winner Announced

When South Shields' Customs House announced its comedy playwriting competition early last year, it received around forty entrants, each submitting a synopsis and sample scene. A group of five judges, the three who would direct the plays (Chris Elphinstone, Jackie Fielding and Dolores Porretta-Brown) and Pat Thompson and Peter Lathan, representing the Board, read all the entries and selected the three finalists.

Each of the three was produced during this year's February Drama Festival: Jump You B******! by Paul Buie, Off-Track by Kevin Gardner, and Scribblers by John Barnshaw. Another judging panel - three Friends of the Customs House, a representative from New Writing North, and Board members Rob Lawson (editor of the Sunderland Echo) and Peter Lathan (editor of the BTG) - was set up to choose one overall winner.

That winner was announced this week: Paul Buie's Jump You B******! was chosen as the best of the three and he won the first prize of £2,000. The two runners-up each received £1,000.
