Dateline: 20th May, 2005
Mackintosh Heads East Cameron Mackintosh has set up a new company, in partnership with the Shanghai Grand Theatre, to produce major musicals in Mandarin for perfromance at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. Both Mackintosh and other producers have taken shows in English to China, among them Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, but they have been for comparatively short runs and for a limited, English-speaking audience. The Shanghai theatre's usual maximum run is four months and is the only theatre in China which can take the large-scale musicals, so the new company will build a new theatre, specifically adapted for the major musicals, which will take much longer runs. Because the shows will be in Mandarin, the audience will be much larger and so longer runs will be necessary. The shows he intends to produce will be performed by Chinese actors - those imported in the past have been by American or European companies - and the first production, due to open in 2007, will be Les Miserables. Other producers are also hoping to take shows to the new theatre: The Lion King and 42nd Street are strong contenders to be among the first. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
