Jeremy Hunt

Cutting DCMS Costs

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt is aiming to cut to costs of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport by half, he has told the Commons DCMS Select Committee.

He said that the DCMS must be "more imaginative than any other department in Whitehall" for stripping back administration was the best way to protect organisations that depend on government grants.

"We will have to do things differently, we will have to do things more efficiently, and we will have to be more imaginative than any other department in Whitehall because I’m not aware that any other department has set such an ambitious goal," he said.

He has no firm idea of exactly how many posts will be cut, he said, but he has no doubt that there will be "considerably fewer employees" in the future.

His Permanent Secretary Jonathan Stephens told the committee that there are about 400 posts under review and that 70 will go in the current financial year. He hopes that natural wastage and voluntary redundancies will take care of most of the job losses but Hunt has not ruled out compulsory redundancies in order to "protect the front line".

Departmental cuts will save £28m a year and abolishing certain quangos another £28m but he did add that there were no plans to abolish Arts Council England as he firmly believes in the arm's-length principle in arts funding.
