More DCMS Cutting Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State at the Department of Culture Media and Sport, has announced the closure or merger of a number of "arm's length" bodies as part of his drive to "increase transparency, accountability and efficiency." The most relevant to the performing arts is the proposal to abolish the UK Film Council and establish a direct and less bureaucratic relationship with the British Film Institute. This, the DCMS says, "would support front-line services while ensuring greater value for money." Government and Lottery support for film will continue. The Secretary of State also confirmed that the intention to merge the National Lottery Commission with the Gambling Commission, subject to further consideration of the business case. At the same time, the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee has set up an inquiry into arts and heritage funding. The Committee is inviting written submissions and requesting views on the following issues:
The Committee will also examine other areas of interest that are raised during the course of its inquiry. A copy of the submission should be sent by e-mail to cmsev@parliament.uk and have Funding of the Arts and Heritage in the subject line. Submissions should be received by Thursday 2nd September 2010.
