50% DCMS Cuts "Speculation"

Talk of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport cutting half its staff is nothing more than "speculation", sports minister Hugh Robertson MP told the BBC today.

It was reported in yesterday's Guardian that the Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt had told the Treasury that he would make 50% of the DCMS staff redundant and that the departent would move out of its offices on Cockspur Street (just off Trafalgar Square) and moving into another departmental building. The department also has offices in Tottenham Court Road and Hyde Park.

According to the Guardian story the Secretary of State made these proposals because he felt the department had to show that it was willing to make the same kind of severe cuts in administration as its funded organisations would have to face.

However today sports minister Hugh Robertson told the BBC that this was just one option the department is looking at. Other options include much smaller staff redundancies.

The DCMS is one of the smallest government departments, with a staff of just 590 of the total of 468,700 civil servants employed by the government. Its budget is also one of the smallest at £2.1bn.
