Dirty Protest - Back to the Yurt

Cardiff's inimitable Dirty Protest, the remarkable "in-yer-face", high-octane, not-for-profit new writing co-operative with a cult following, return to their yurt at Milgi, Cardiff, to showcase six of the best writing talents in Wales. Award winning writer Gary Owen guest curates the event which boasts an impressive line-up, including Torchwood writer Catherine Tregenna and Emma Reeves, whose adaptation of Carrie's War will get its second run in the West End this year.

"Emma is one of these incredibly unassuming, unboastful people," Owen says. "She's an actual West End successful playwright, here in Wales, and we don't boast about her enough."

Owen, who is currently the writing the BBC series Fabulous Baker Boys, was delighted when Catherine Tregenna also agreed to join the line-up and knew just what he wanted her to submit. "Cath is an amazing writer who did one play and then was snapped up by television. But I knew she had this little monologue about a woman starting an AA programme and realising it's not for her, because she sent it to me years ago. When I asked her could we use it, she said we could, but she'd lost the only copy. Luckily I'd kept the copy she sent me, though several house moves - and so it will finally get a performance."

Tregenna and Reeves will be joined by Greg Glover and Emily Steel, both of whom Gary mentored as part of the Royal Court and BBC writersroom, and by Paines Plough writer-in-residence Duncan MacMillan.

In the 'Pop Your Cherry' slot is newcomer Ross Southard, who, Owen says, is "very tall and very funny. He's been doing all sorts of jobs on Dr Who and Torchwood and writing TV things in his spare time, and they're great. I thought I'd see if we could tempt him into theatre before TV grabs him forever."

Back to the Yurt is the latest chapter to the Dirty Protest phenomenon, which has taken Cardiff by storm since in the short time since the co-operative's creation in 2007. The six short script-in-hand performances will each explore the theme of Heartbreakers in a maximum of ten minutes and will be directed by Doctor Who writer Helen Raynor and DP co-founder, Mared Swain.

Dirty Protest - Back To The Yurt @ Milgi, Cardiff, Thursday April 16. Two performances 7.30pm & 9pm. £3
