"A Truly Vibrant, Engaging Festival" That's the verdict of Edinburgh International Festival Director Jonathan Mills on the 2010 event which ended on Sunday. "We've had a successful year financially which is fantastic," he said, "but what is more important, I believe is that we have more than measured up to our name. We have helped to transform Edinburgh, bringing the vibrant, vital cultures of the New World to its residents' doorsteps, and we have showcased this wonderful city to the world." Over 2,300 artists from California, New York and New England, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Argentina, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Holland, Germany and the UK took part and audiences too came from all over the world. At the same time, almost 50% of ticket buyers came from EH postcodes. Nearly a third of events were total sell outs, including Vieux Carré, Caledonia, Sun Also Rises, Porgy and Bess and El Niño. Attendances increased by 1% over 2009 but actual box office takings rose by 3% to £2.67m.
