Jonathan Mills

New EIF Director Looks East

"Why wouldn't this festival want, in five years time in the lead-up to the Olympic Games in London, to be part of a very sophisticated and ambitious tourism programme that this country would undertake, that encourages people from Bangalore and Shanghai to travel to the Edinburgh festival?" new Edinburgh International Festival director Jonathan Mills asked in an interview in The Scotsman.

Only two weeks into his new job, Mills told the newspaper that attracting more overseas visitors is critical in dealing with the threats posed by other festivals, as outlined in the Thundering Hooves report.

As part of the drive to bring more overseas visitors to the Festival, he had announced that the 2007 event will begin on the Friday and not the Sunday as has been the case since the Festival began. The idea is to attract weekend visitors from abroad.

He made no comment on a potential programme for the next Festival. "I'm not going to comment specifically at this stage on any programming things, on anything that hasn't been negotiated or finally decided," he said. However he did point out that he believes that the programming should evolve and not be revolutionised.

There has, however, been little international marketing in recent years, he said, and he feels it is important to position the EIF alongside others such as those in Saltzburg and Aignon.
