ENO Job Cuts

English National Opera is to cut 10% of its workforce in a bid to reduce fixed costs ahead of an expected at least standstill, possibly cut grant from ACE.

The company is assuming that, as indicated last week by the DCMS, funding to the Arts Council will be reduced under the forthcoming Comprehensive Spending Review, with a knock-on effect on its funding. These fixed costs, which include salaries, account for two thirds of the company's £30m turnover.

In a letter to staff chief executive Loretta Thomasi wrote, "Many options have been considered to achieve increased flexibility and a decrease in these 'fixed' costs and, whilst we believe it is vital that ENO retains a strong core of staff, the contractual overhaul includes the potential loss of around 45 jobs across the company."

It is expected that the job losses will include a reduction in the members of the orchestra and the fifty-strong chorus, which will be supplemented by freelance staff when necessary.

Gerry Morrissey, assistant general secretary of BECTU, suggested that it appears that ENO is trying to "casualise" its staff and that the union will fight any cuts. ENO management is due to meet with the unions in the coming week.

This is not the first time proposals have been made to cut ENO's chorus and technical staff. Both chorus and technicians voted to strike over the matter in February 2003.
