Dateline: 25th March, 2007 ENO Sells off Workshop According to a report in The Stage, English National Opera is in the priocess of selling off its construction workshops in Stepney at a price said to be in the region of £1.7m. The company has already announced that it is to make 45 members of staff redundant, and there are fears that the props and costume workshops at Lilian Bayliss House will also be sold. The Stage report says that an ENO insider has claimed that the sale is to mask an operating loss in the current financial year. Its source adds that the company has been underfunded for years and that it needs an extra £1m to operate at the current level. Thus it is attempting to reduce costs. There are fears, the source adds, that the company will outsource more of its support work, including props and wardrobe. A spokesperson for ENO told The Stage, "ENO recognises that it must protect the companys future by reducing fixed costs in a variety of ways. These include agreeing more flexible working practices in line with needs and overhauling all regular costs/outgoings."
