BECTU to Strike at ENO

Members of the union BECTU at English National Opera have voted to strike over pay, it was announced today.

The union had asked for a 5% rise but the company offered 2.77%. Strike action was voted for by 94% and it is expected that technical, managerial and administrative departments will all be affected. No dates for action have yet been announced so it is not known how or even whether productions will be affected.

The vote follows the departure of artistic director Seán Doran and the later resignation of chairman Martin Smith.

"The ballot result indicates the level of dissatisfaction the staff have with the board," Bectu assistant general secretary Gerry Morrissey told the BBC. "Instead of uniting the organisation after the recent departure of the chairman and chief executive they have chosen confrontation with the union over pay."
