A Piece of Shameless Advertising! And why not? Peter Lathan's book - It's Behind You! - The Story of Panto - is now available only from the BTG at the bargain price of £10 plus £2 p&p within the UK. In it we look at the history of pantomime - the only theatrical genre we Brits ever invented - going back to the Greeks, the Romans, medieval Italy, 17th century France and, of course, London in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. We look at the traditional panto characters - where else do you find a woman, played by a man, who is mother to a boy, played by a girl, who is in love with a girl, played by a girl? We look at the great panto performers, from John Lun to Les Dawson, from Joseph Grimaldi to John Inman, and the stars of stage, screen, radio, TV, pop music and sport who have appeared on the panto stage. Then there are the panto stories themselves: where did they come from? How have they changed over the years? Why have some survived to be as popular as ever today whilst others have sunk without trace? There's even a (reasonably) complete list of all the pantos that have ever had a professional performance. And just how old are those panto gags? And lots and lots of pictures. There's archive material from centuries ago and production shots of modern pantos - some taken by the author. (No! not the archive material!) It's the perfect theatrical Christmas present. And we now have a much more unbiased review from Philip Fisher... Unfortunately we have no means of accepting money over the Internet, so we can only accept cheques by post. To buy your copy, send a cheque for £12, made out to P D Lathan, to 62 Sandringham Road, Roker, Sunderland, SR6 9QZ. Or those outside the UK can buy it from Amazon UK (see the panel on the right). Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
