Music Theatre Festival Loses Funding Both Cardiff City Council and BBC Cymru Wales have withdrawn their funding for the the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre. Between them they contribute £750,000 of the £1.25m costs of the festival. Sir Roger Jones, chair of the CIFMT board, said that it has proved impossible to find other funding, so that it is now considering the possibility of moving the festival to another city. The four full-time members of staff, including chief executive Joanne Benjamin, have been made redundant. More than 46,000 seats were sold for the events of the third festival in 2006 and the estimated economic impact on the city was £1.4m rising from an estimated figure of £1.1m in 2005. "The festival has truly pushed Cardiff to the forefront of musical theatre across the world - major producers on Broadway and in the West End now look to see what is happening at the festival as an indication of where musical theatre is heading," said Sir Roger Jones. "We think the festival has a big future." Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
