Jerry Springer - The Closure?

According to reports, the closure of Jerry Springer the Opera may be very close. This is not because of poor houses but because of a libel action brought by one of the co-producers against the Daily Mail.

In January this year the paper claimed that the show was in trouble and "losing money hand over fist." The producers allowed the paper to see the accounts books and, as a result, a full retraction was published. However one of the producers, Avalon Productions, decided to sue for defamation - claiming, according to one newspaper, £440,000 in lost revenue as a direct result of the Mail article - and the costs of the case are having to be met from the show's marketing budget.

Other members of the production team, however, do not agree with Avalon's actions and Allan McKeown issued a statement which said, "Neither Allan McKeown nor the production of Jerry Springer The Opera are a party to, nor do they endorse, the action that Avalon Promotions (co-producer ) has brought against the Daily Mail. After rave reviews and favourable press from its inception in Edinburgh in August 2002 through its West End opening November 2003, a less flattering and factually incorrect article appeared in the Daily Mail Diary on January 30th 2004 .The Daily Mail agreed that the gossip piece was incorrect and printed a full apology. However Avalon acting alone chose to bring a defamation action against the newspaper. The costs of any action are the sole responsibility of Avalon, should not be charged to the production nor affect the marketing of the show."

Update
On 29th October one of the producers, Jon Thoday, made the following statement: "We have told Andrew Lloyd Webber's theatre company Really Useful Theatres (The owners of the Cambridge Theatre) that the show will not be closing. A final decision as to the future of Jerry Springer The Opera will not be taken until the show's case with the Daily Mail is heard on 13th December."

According to other reports finding finance for a Broadway trasnsfer may be proving harder than expected, with many feeling it is too adventurous, with its graphic sexuality and languge, for conservative Broadway audiences.
