The opening ceremony

LIFT in Barking & Dagenham

The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham’s Molten Festival is teaming up for the first time this year with LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) to create a unique and predominantly free event that combines internationally acclaimed artists and performers with the idea of a quintessentially British village fete.

From the dazzling opening ceremony featuring pioneering French theatre company Transe-Express who fuse aerial acrobatics, fire, opera, rock and dance to Classy-oke (the chance to sing live karaoke backed by a fifty piece orchestra), this quirky festival brings spectacle and sparkle to Barking & Dagenham this summer.

There are local history tours developed in collaboration with artist Peter Reder and director Corrine Micallef, saucy cabaret courtesy of the Whoopee Club, a Global Village Fete, cricket on the green, cream teas, craft stalls and an public ping-pong-a-thon courtesy of performance artists Search Party.

“The Lift” is an ingenious venue on the cutting edge of portable structure technology. Highly flexible, and an exemplar of sustainable, environmentally-friendly design, The Lift is a theatre, a concert hall, an open-air stage, an interactive billboard, a cinema, a venue for exhibitions and a public meeting space.

“We’re very lucky to be working with LIFT this year – making sure our festival is bigger and better than ever. LIFT brings a wealth of ideas and experience to this year’s programme – not to mention the gigantic Lift structure landing on Abbey Green. From the moment The Lift lands it will be non-stop Festival fun all round and a chance for the people of Barking and Dagenham to really get involved and enjoy themselves!” said Sara Doctors, Molten Festival Producer.
