Shaping the Future of Musical Theatre The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) is to hold a conference this summer on the future of musical theatre training in higher education. The three-day event, Creative Collaboration: How Are We Shaping the Future of Musical Theatre? is a first step towards a new strategy for teaching the theatrical form at university level. A key aim is to develop ways to enhance cross-discipline collaboration and make the industry more receptive to flexible and adaptable graduates who can bring a broad skill-set to the table and contribute to the creative process. The 15th-17th June 2010 event is LIPA's annual Creativity and Employability (CANDE) conference and is aimed at practitioners and educators. The London-based writer and teacher Jenifer Toksvig, who is working with LIPA to develop the conference, commented, "If there's anything you'd like to change about musical theatre education, then you are the right person to be there. "We all want to help our students realise their individuality as creative artists, but we are somewhat limited by the demands of the work available to them in the musical theatre industry. "This conference proposes that through creative collaboration, between educators and artists, higher education can actually change the future of the musical theatre industry." The conference will be organised around the principles of Open Space Technology. This radical system favours spontaneity and self-organisation over set agendas, timetables and keynote speakers, all features of traditional forums. "Open Space Technology is all about creating a space in which people can turn their passions into actions. It's a very simple yet incredibly powerful way to enable creative collaboration and bring about change that is driven by desire rather than demand." Jenifer explained. For further information about Creative Collaboration: How Are We Shaping the Future of Musical Theatre? please contact conference co-ordinator Lydia Bates at LIPA on (0151) 330 3136 or email l.bates@lipa.ac.uk.
