Manchester Theatre Awards End

The Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards will no longer go ahead.

Panelists received a letter yesterday from Maria McGeoghan, editor-in-chief at MEN Media, informing them of the decision. It said:

"It is with regret that we must inform you that we are ending the MEN Theatre Awards due to the challenging economic climate... We owe special thanks to Alan [Hulme], who has tried hard recently to secure support from arts venues and hotels so that we could resume the annual ceremony that was suspended last year. Unfortunately, we must also accept that as we have been unable to secure sponsorship we must now bring the event to a close... We will inform the theatres of our decision and tell them that we are ending the awards and disbanding the MEN Theatre Awards panel. We have been talking to another organisation about taking the event on—and if anything positive comes of this we will let you know."

One member of the panel, the BTG's North West Editor David Chadderton, said, "Last year the awards only went ahead due to hard work by long-standing members of the panel, especially Kevin Bourke, and were announced in a special MEN supplement rather than at a formal awards ceremony as in the past. The awards have been running since 1982 and are very popular with theatres, many of whom had already expressed an interest in hosting a future events ceremony."
