Theatre at the Manchester Literature Festival

The sixth annual Manchester Literature Festival begins next week, featuring talks and events by writers, newly-commissioned pieces, activities for writers and readers to take part in, children's events and a few events that may be of interest to theatre enthusiasts.

Lady Antonia Fraser's book Must You Go? tells the story of her 33-year marriage to the late playwright, actor and director Harold Pinter based on her diaries, and she will be speaking about it at Whitworth Art Gallery.

Sarah Dunant's novel Sacred Hearts set in the convent of Santa Caterina in northern Italy in 1570 will be given a semi-dramatised performance once only at Manchester Cathedral on 16 October featuring actors Niamh Cusack and Deborah Findlay and early music group Musica Secreta.

There are events by novelists who are also known as playwrights including Michael Frayn speaking about his book My Father's Fortune about the life of his father and David Lodge, whose play Secret Thoughts was premièred at the Octagon earlier this year, talking about his book A Man of Parts about H G Wells. There will also be talks from Jamaican dub poet, director and playwright Jean 'Binta' Breeze, screenwriter Stephen Butchard, Gerry Potter performing theatre-verse from his book The Men Pomes and screenwriter, novelist and children's writer Anthony Horowitz on writing a new Sherlock Holmes story.

The Manchester Literature Festival runs from 10 to 23 October at various locations around Manchester. For more information, see www.manchesterliteraturefestival.co.uk.
