The Works: New Musical Theatre Writing

Mercury Musical Developments has announced The Works, an exploration of new musical theatre writing which runs from 24th to 27th October, sponsored by The Noel Coward Foundation, with additional support from The Theatre Museum and Really Useful Theatres.

The creative staff of the Academy for New Musical Theatre (ANMT) from Los Angeles, visit the UK for the first time and will join leading British musical theatre practitioners for four days of discussion, readings, workshops and masterclasses in the West End including the UK premieres of two new musical double-bills commissioned and developed by MMD and ANMT.

Monday 24 October

  • 3-5 pm Writers’ Workshop, The Theatre Museum, Covent Garden
  • 7-9.30 pm Musical Theatre Panel Discussion ‘Where do we go from here…?’
  • followed by Writers’ Reception, The Theatre Museum, Covent Garden

Tuesday 25 October

  • 3-5 pm Writers’ Masterclass, The Grand Saloon, Theatre Royal Drury Lane
  • 7-9.30 pm Rehearsed Reading of Shahrazad a new double-bill: Heads or Tales by Stephen Oles, Sandy Shanin and Noelle Donfeld and Me & Shahrazad by Chris Burgess and Denise Wright, at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden

Wednesday 26 October

3-5 pm Talk with Q&A session on NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program – four British writers have now graduated from this prestigious course who will share their experiences with a writer audience. The Theatre Museum, Covent Garden

7-9.30 pm Rehearsed Reading of The Big Deal a new double-bill: The Big Ending by ‘Shrubshall and Free’ and The Big Beginning by Scott Guy and Ross Kalling at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden

Thursday 27 October

  • 3-5 pm Writers’ Masterclass, The Grand Saloon, Theatre Royal Drury Lane
  • 7-9.30pm Writers’ Workshop, The Actors Centre, Covent Garden
