No MU Strike over Les Mis Move

Rumours of a possible strike by members of the Musicians Union over the necessity to use a smaller orchestra when Les Miserables moves from the Palace to the Queen's were scotched today after a meeting between MU representatives and Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. The pit at the Queen's is much smaller than that of the Palace and so the number of live musicians will have to be reduced to ten and the company propose to use "the most up to date music technology combined with live musicians to deliver the same production values that have been enjoyed at the Palace Theatre for the last 19 years."

The MU said after the meeting that, although it is ototally opposed to replacing live musicians with "machines", the union has a good relationship with Cameron Mackintosh, one of the biggest employers of musicians in the West End, and does not wish to "spoil it."

A statement from Cameron Mackintosh said:

"A constructive meeting was held today between Cameron Mackintosh Limited and the Musicians Union. There is no dispute with the Musicians Union, and we have agreed to assess the options available to us in moving Les Miserables to the Queens Theatre. We agreed to meet again with the MU and we are all hopeful for a positive outcome."
