Gone With the Wind production photo

Gone With the Wind to Close
Trevor Nunn's production of Gone With the Wind (New London) is to close on 14th June. Reviews widely criticised it for being too long and producers said early in May that cuts were being considered, although, somewhat ominously, they also said that the show would certainly run into June.

It will close after just 79 performances.

Producer Aldo Scrofani said, "Despite the critical response the company have enjoyed much praise from audience members during our run and for that we are grateful. Nevertheless we have made the difficult decision to close the production."

Plans for a Broadway transfer are now on hold but, said Scrofani, "We are pursuing various options that have been presented to us from interested parties worldwide."

Eileen Atkins, Anna Maxwell Martin, Sophie Thompson, Sam Kelly and Con O'Neill are to star in Joanna Murray-Smith's comedy The Female of the Species, which will open at the Vaudeville on 16th July (previews from 10th).

Directed by Roger Michell, the play is based on an incident in 2000 when Germaine Greer was held captive in her home by a deluded young student. In the play author Margot is ocnfronted by Molly who believes that Margot's ever-changing feminist perspective has ruined her life.

Find Your Talent Pilots
The government has announced the ten origanisations across the ocuntry will will pilot the £25m Find Your Talent scheme, under which all schoolchildren will receive five hours of culture a week. This could be in the form of artists coming into schools or children going out to galleries or theatres, or a mixture. Each area will try different approaches.

"Find Your Talent is a truly exciting initiative that could open minds and change young lives," said Culture Secretary Andy Burnham. "Enjoying and exploring culture and the arts is not a luxury, or an add-on, for young people. It matters in its own right and can be a way of developing essential life skills like communication and creativity, and contribute to personal development and self-esteem. Too many young people still leave school without ever really finding out what they could be good at - the things that could be the basis of a fulfilling life."

The ten organisations and the areas they will serve are:

Bolton Borough Council
The Creative Foundation (serving Shepway District and including Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh)
The Customs House (North and South Tyneside)
Hampshire County Council
Leeds Children’s Services
Leicestershire County Council
Liverpool City Region Partnership (serving three Merseyside neighbourhoods)
North Somerset
Telford and Wrekin Council
Tower Hamlets

The aim is to give children the opportunity to:

  • perform on stage and attend top quality performances, exhibitions at museums and galleries, and heritage sites;
  • get hands-on experience of the creative industries including film making, radio and TV;
  • learn a musical instrument, and take part in a musical performance in front of an audience;
  • produce creative writing and appreciate authors and how they work;
  • earn about - and practise - new media and digital art;
  • develop art and craft skills.
