566 Schools Recognised
for Commitment to the Arts
The Arts Council of England has announced that 566 schools have been
awarded Artsmark, the national arts award for schools.
The Artsmark award recognises schools that have made a strong commitment
to the arts and that have developed a nationally recognised range of
arts provision for their pupils. The aim of Artsmark is to encourage
schools to increase their provision of arts to pupils and to raise the
profile of arts education across the country.
There are three levels of Artsmark: Artsmark, Artsmark Silver, and
Artsmark Gold. Awards are offered annually and are valid for a period
of three years.
Following a school-led application process, which was supported through
assessment and validation by education and arts professionals, the Arts
Council has awarded:
- 241 Gold Artsmark awards
- 180 Silver Artsmark awards
- 145 Artsmark awards
Peter Hewitt, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of England said:
We are delighted with the overwhelming response Artsmark has
once again generated from schools across the country. Artsmark celebrates
the importance of the arts in education and rewards the commitment
of schools to introducing children to the arts at an early age. We
hope this interest will stay with them all their lives.
All the schools displaying the Artsmark badge have demonstrated
that they are concerned with the wider development of young people,
as well as with academic success. This will benefit not only the children,
but society as a whole too.
