Image from Alegria

Cirque du Soleil Returns
January sees the return, for the tenth time, of Canadian circus company Cirque du Soleil to the Royal Albert Hall, where it will present its new show Alegría from 5th to 29th January. The show has a cast of 56 musicians and performers, including acrobats and aerialists.

Alegría is a mood, a state of mind. The themes of the show, whose name means "jubilation" in Spanish, are many. Power and the handing down of power over time, the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, old age, youth—it is against this backdrop that the characters of Alegría play out their lives. Kings' fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.

Hair Extension
While every other theatre publication tries not to use the obvious headline, the BTG succumbs to the temptation offered by the fact that the Gate's production of Hair has extended its booking period by three weeks to 29th October.

Sir Henry Irving

Irving Returns to Covent Garden
Sir Henry Irving will be back onstage in Covent Garden later this month. Not the actual man himself, of course, for he died in 1905, but he is the central character of a play, The Trial Of Sir Henry Irving (Lately Deceased), by Andrew Shepherd, presented by ACS Random Productions at the Courtyard Theatre in the Theatre Museum.

The production, which coincides with a Theatre Museum exhibition of photographs and scripts commemorating the centenary of his death, runs from 13th October (previews from 11th) and runs until 30th. The exhibition opens on 11th and runs until 28th Februatry, 2006.

Stephanie Cole George Baker

The Rivals on Tour
Bath Theatre Royal is to tour a new production of Sheridan's The Rivals, starring Stephanie Cole (Mrs Malaprop) and George Baker (Sir Anthony Absolute) . Directed by Christopher Morahan, it opens in Bath on 4th October and goes on to Glasgow, Brighton, Malvern, Cambridge, Guildford and Richmond. Further dates for 2006 are to be announced later.

There will be a gala performance on Wednesday 12th October, celebrating the theatre's 200th birthday. Tickets (£75) include a top price seat for the play, a champagne reception, a copy of the new book about the theatre and the showing of a specially commissioned film about the theatre. The evening will be hosted by Ned Sherrin and only 200 tickets are avilable.

According to Variety, Ewan McGregor is in talks to play Fredrick Warne, Potter's publisher and fiancé who died before they could get married.
