Annis and Le Prevost
at the Royal Court
Francesca Annis and Nicholas Le Provost are to appear in Swedish playwright
Lars Norén's Blood at the Royal Court Theatre Downstairs
this autumn. The play, a UK premiere, opens on 25th September (previews
from 18th) and runs for a month. In the Theatre Upstairs will be Playing
the Victim by the Presnyakov Brothers from 1st September to 4th
October, which is followed by a new play by new writer Lucy Prebbles,
The Sugar Syndrome (16th October 15th November).
Three Fringe Shows
to Transfer to London
Three of the Edinburgh Fringe shows which are due to open today have
already confirmed London outings later this year. Gregory Burke's The
Straits will open at the Hampstead Theatre in October, Playing
the Victim by the Presnyakov Brothers goes to the Royal Court Theatre
Upstairs in September, and Heather Raffo's Nine Parts of Desire
will play at the Bush in September. All three are at the Traverse during
the Fringe.
ETT to Produce R&J
English Touring Theatre is to produce Romeo and Juliet as its
next Shakespeare tour. It will open at the Theatre Royal, York, on 8th
September and then go on to Aberdeen, Norwich, Malvern, Oxford, Glasgow,
Blackpool, Coventry, Salford, Cambridge and Brighton.
The production will star Adam Croasdell and Laura Rees, and the cast
will include Richard Avery, Anna Francolini, Colin Haigh, Robert Styles
and Marjorie Yates. It will be directed by Stephen Unwin.
Foy Leaves RSC
The Royal Shakespeare Company's managing director, Christopher Foy,
has announced his resignation. Foy, who joined the RSC from Unilever
in 2000, said that, after three demanding years, "I leave the RSC
at a point when it is set fair for a secure and exciting future."
According to a report in The Stage, artistic director Michael Boyd
has insisted that the RSC board should find an interim replacement immediately,
from within the industry.
Nine Month Carousel
Tour
UK Productions is to tour Carousel, starring Sam Kane, from 18th
August. pening at the Churchill, Bromley, it will go on to Belfast,
Liverpool, Edinburgh, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland, Manchester, Hull,
Norwich, Birmingham, Bradford, Wolverhampton, Oxford, Blackpool, Dartford,
Brighton, Milton Keynes, Bristol, Glasgow, Woking, Darlington, Llandudno,
Nottingham, Eastbourne, Ipswich, Sheffield, Southampton and Tunbridge
Wells (other dates to be announced), finishing in May 2004.
New MFA in Directing
Birkbeck College in the University of London is to run a new Master
of Fine Arts course in theatre directing which will include placements
on acting courses and with producing companies. The cost to students
will be £3,500 a year for the two year course and Channel 4 is
to make £20,000 available for student sponsorship. The course
is only open to people already working in theatre.
Shakespeare Celebration
at the Globe
Shakespeare's Globe is to host a celebration of Shakespeare in aid of
the Prince's Trust on 1st September. The evening will include scenes
from Romeo and Juliet (performed by Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth
Paltrow), The Tempest (Paul Scholfield and Timothy West) and
As You Like It (Diana Rigg). Ticket prices range from £20
to £300 and are available from the Globe website.
HRH the Prince of Wales will attend.
Dirty Dusting
Moves to Bigger Premises
Dirty Dusting,
the comedy by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood about three over-seventy cleaners
who set up a sex chat-line on their employer's premises, which played
to full houses at the Customs House in February, is not only being revived
at the South Shields venue from 26th to 30th August, it is also transferring
to the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, for three nights from 16th to 18th
September. It has already sold out its original target and now the Upper
Circle has been opened.
Death of Don Estelle
Actor Don Estelle, best known for his appearances as Lofty in the sitcom
It Ain't Half Hot Mum in the seventies, has died, aged 70. He
had been ill for a long time and died in Rochdale Infirmary.
Joseph Brings Singular
Women to the King's Head
Lesley Joseph is to perform her one-woman show Singular Women
at London's King's Head from 25th September (previews from 16th) to
9th November. This will be its London premiere.
The Return of Blake's
7
A new TV mini-series based on the cult science fiction show Blake's
7 is to be screened in 2005. Paul Darrow, who played villain Avon
in the original, has joined with producers Andrew Mark Sewell and Simon
Moorhead to acquire the rights. He is the only member of the original
cast expected to reprise their roles. The mini-series will have a budget
in excess of £3m, it is claimed.
Money to Burn
at the Venue
The Venue, the first new venue in the West End for seventy years which
is currently dark after hosting Boy George's Taboo, will re-open
with Money to Burn, a thriller/farce/satirical musical, on 9th
October (previews from 29th September).
Extending
The following are extending their runs:

- The Phantom of the Opera is now booking to 28th February,
2004
