Harold Fielding Dies
Theatrical impressario Harold Fielding has died at the age of 86. Originally
a violinist, his speciality was musicals and he presented, among others,
Half A Sixpence, Sweet Charity, Show Boat, Charley
Girl and Barnum. He was awarded the gold badge of merit by
the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors in 1996.
Christmas at the Almeida
The Almeida's Christmas show this year is to be a new play by Joanna
Laurens, Five Gold Rings. Directed by Michael Attenborough, it
will star Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory and runs from 17th December
to 17th January (previews from 11th December).
New Auditorium for
Belgrade
Coventry's Belgrade Theatre is to get a new 300-seater auditorium as
part of a £10m development package which includes a new foyer
and backstage area, and a general refurbishment of the building. The
development is expected to start in April 2004 and to take two years
to complete. Although theer will be closures during the period, the
theatre will continute to produce work, artistic director Hamish Glen
said.
Mitchell Returns to
the Royal Court
The Royal Court is to present the premiere of Gary Mitchell's new play,
Loyal Women, at the Theatre Downstairs from 11th November to
13th December (previews from 5th November). This will be the Irish playwright's
third play at the theatre.
Unknown Brecht Material
Found
A cache of previously unknown short stories, letters and sketches by
Bertolt Brecht has been discovered in Switzerland. Included in the private
collection in Zürich are notes on Italian translations of a number
of his works, including Mother Courage and The Caucasian Chalk
Circle.
Venables Wins Young
Vic Award
Clare Venables, director of education at the RSC, has been awarded the
first Young Vic Award, which is made to those who have inspired a new
generation of theatre people.
Clare," said Young Vic director David Lan, "has been
an inspiration to me as to so many others through her belief that the
theatre really is for everyone and that there is no-one alive whose
life can not be enriched through art. A whole generation of theatre
makers are the children of Clares wit, compassion, adventurousness,
her strength of purpose and her tremendous, unquenchable sense of fun.
Fugard Celebrated in
Liverpool and London
Two Athol Fugard plays are being presented this month as part of Black
History Month. Phil Willmott's prodction of Master Harold and the
Boys, voted one of the most significant plays of the last century
in the National Theatre's poll, is currently playing at the Liverpool
Everyman, and Treatment Theatre Company is to revive Hello and Goodbye,
starring Zubin Varla, at the Southwark Playhouse from 14th October to
1st November.
Democracy
Transfers
Michael Frayn's Democracy, currently at the RNT Cottesloe until
20th December, is to transfer to the Lyttelton on 8th March and will
run for 27 performances until 27th March. It is expected that it will
move with the same cast, led by Roger Allam and Conleth Hill.
EastEnders
Axed in US
US subscription TV channel BBC America has axed EastEnders and
provoked a furious backlash from American fans of the soap. Nearly 9,000
people have signed a petition protesting at the move which the channel
says was made because of poor viewing figures.
