Dateline:
6th June, 2004
Old Masters
Transfer
The Birmingham Rep production of Simon Gray's latest play, The Old
Masters, directed by Harold Pinter, is to transfer to London's Comedy
Theatre, where it will open on 1st July (previews from 26th June. The
production stars Edward Fox, Peter Bowles, Barbara Jefford, Sally Dexter
and Steven Pacey.
Millie to Close
Early
The West End production of Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Shaftesbury
is to close on 26th June after a run of eight months. It had been booking
up to 15th January, 2005. The show was nominated for Best New Musical
in the Olivier Awards and its star Amanda Holden also received a nomination.
In spite of the show receiving generally good reviews, tickets sales
have not reached expected levels and there have been suggestions (from
unnamed "insiders") that the main reason is the fact that
audiences could not rely on Holden actually appearing. During the run
she has taken two holidays, had time off for filming the new series
of TV drama Cutting It, and spent two weeks of ill after being
admitted to hospital with a kidney infection.
Early in the run Maureen Lipman had to drop out to nurse her husband
Jack Rosenthal who last week died of cancer.
And Tonight's the
Night to Close, Too
According to a report in the daily Mirror, Tonight's the Night,
the musical based on the music of Rod Stewart, which was recently repackaged
as The Rod Stewart Musical, will close on or around its first
anniversary. It opened on 7th November, 2003, previewing from 15th October.
Written by Ben Elton and playing at the Victoria Palace, it is currently
booking till 2nd October.
And LaBute Goes!
Also announcing early closing last week was the West End production
of Neil LaBute's The Shape of Things (New Ambassadors), starring
Alicia Witt. It will close on 12th June, after just four weeks. It was
booking to 3rd July. Its premiere at the Almeida in 2001 and subsequent
transfer to Broadway were both very successful.
