Another Pullman in London
Another stage version of one of Philip Pullman's novels is to open at the Linbury Studio at the Royal Opera House on 16th March. This operatic Clockwork will run until 18th April and will then go on a national tour.

Hollywood Star for West End Mamet
Hollywood star Julia Stiles (Mona Lisa Smile, The Bourne Identity, Ten Things I Hate About You) is to make her West End debut in David Mamet's Oleanna at the end of April. The production will be directed by Lindsay Posner but no theatre or co-star has yet been decided.

Nunn to Direct Hamlet
Trevor Nunn is to direct a West End production of Hamlet at the Old Vic from 17th April to 31st July. He intends that each character should be played by someone of the right age: Hamlet will be aged 18/19, Ophelia 15/16 and Claudius and Gertrude in their late thirties/early forties.

We'll Have Not So Good Years, Says Hytner
The last year has been a really good one for the National Theatre, its director Nicholas Hytner said at the launch of the new season's programme, but “We will have, I promise you," he added, "less successful years than the one we’ve just had. It’s the law of nature."

Financial hard times are ahead, he warned. There has been a drop in corporate sponsorship and box office takings are down because of discounted ticket schemes, so the theatre is now expecting a deficit of half a million pounds at the end of the financial year.

Hytner also announced the launch of a new £5m fundraising effort for the National Studio, its workshop space for the development of new projects, which is the only facility owned by the RNT, not the government.

Young Frankenstein for the Stage?
Mel Brooks, in London to promote the opening of ticket sales for The Producers, has confirmed that he and Thomas Meehan are working on a stage version of another of his films, Young Frankenstein.
