Hall's Dream
for the West End
Edward Halls' all-male production of A
Midsummer Night's Dream is to open at the Comedy Theatre on
7th August for what will be - initially at any rate - a ten week season.
The Propeller company's production began life at the Watermill (The
West Berkshire Playhouse) and has been touring for some weeks.
Millie
Coming to the West End
The musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, based on the 1967 film
starring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing, is to receive
its West End premiere in Octber. It will open at the Shaftesbury on
21st October (previews from 11th). No casting details have been confirmed,
but it is thought that Amanda Holden will play Millie. This would be
Holden's West End debut: to date she has been primarily a television
actress.
The show, which premiered on Broadway in April last year (it is still
running), gained six Tonys, including Best Musical.
McTeer To Play Petrucchio
Janet McTeer is to play Petrucchio in the Globe's all-female production
of The Taming of the Shrew. Kathryn Hunter will play Katherine.
The production opens on 10th August.
Young Vic Autumn/Winter
Season
The Young Vic has announced its autumn/winter season:
- When The World Was Green by Joseph Chaikin and Sam Shepard
opens on 18th September
- Skellig, written and adapted by David Almond from his children's
novel of the same name, will open on 3rd December.
Reza West End Premiere
The Jermyn Street Theatre is to present the London premiere of Yasmina
Reza's Hammerklavier, a play based on her autobiographical novel.
Its UK premiere took place last year at the Edinburgh Fringe. The production
will star Susie Lindeman, who also starred in the Edinburgh
production.
Abigail to Close
The revival of Mike Leigh's Abigail's
Party is to close six weeks early on 12th July.The production,
which celebrates the play's 25 anniversary, opened at the Hampstead
Theatre, moved to the New Ambassadors and then, in April, transferred
to the Whitehall Theatre where it had been booking until 23rd August.
A regional tour is now being planned.
The musical Grease (Victoria Palace) has also announced its
closure. It will close on 6th September, the end of the current booking
period.
Birmingham's Steinbeck
Success for the West End
Birmingham Rep's production of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men,
starring Matthew Kelly and George Costigan, is to open at the Savoy
Theatre on 23rd October.
New Copacabana
Coming
Gemma Craven will star in a new production of Barry Manilow's Copacabana
which is to set out on a national tour on 10th June. It will open at
the Alexandra, Birmingham,, before going on to the Oxford Apollo (24th
- 28th June), Liverpool Empire (1st - 12th July), Bristol Hippodrome
(15th - 26th July), Hastings White Rock Theatre (28th July - 2nd August),
Cardiff New Theatre (4th - 9th August), Grimsby Auditorium (19th - 23rd
August), Sunderland Empire (2nd - 13th September), Edinburgh Playhouse
(23rd Sept - 4th October), York Opera House (7th - 18th October), and
Manchester Opera House (21st October - 1st November).
Another Pop Musical
Another musical based on a pop star's back catalogue is to open in the
West End's Victoria Palace on 6th November (previews from 15th October.
Tonight's the Night will be built around the music of Rod Stewart
and will be written by Ben Elton. It will deal loosely with the Faust
legend.
Extending
- The Lion King (Lyceum) is now booking to 28th March 2004.
- Trevor Nunn's sold-out production of The Lady from the Sea
(Almeida) has added two matinees on 19th and 26th June at 3.00pm.
- Unsuspecting Susan (a one-woman play by Stewart Permutt,
starring Celia Imrie) (King's Head) has extended by three weeks to
6th July.
- US and THEM (Hampstead) by Tamsin Oglesby, starring Hugh
Bonneville, Harriet Walter, Siobhan Redmond and Matthew Marsh has
extended by a week to 5th July.
- The Woman in Black (Fortune Theatre) has extended by five
months to 31st January 2004.
