Irons to Return to the
West End
Next year will see Jeremy Irons appear on the West End stage for the
first time for seventeen years.
He will appear in Embers, a play by Christopher Hampton based
on the novel by Hungarian write Sandor Marai, and directed by Michael
Blakemore. It will open at the Duke of York's on 1st March (previews
from 15th February). No other casting has been announced.
Set in a Hungarian castle in 1940, retired general Henrik, played by
Irons, awaits the arrival of his friend Konrad who had mysteriously
disappeared thirty years before.
Two Musical Birthdays
Tow major musicals celebrate anniversaries this weekend. Les Misérables
celebrated its 20th birthday yesterday (Saturday, 8th October), whilst
The Phantom of the Opera is nineteen years old tonight.
Les Mis is now the second longest running West End musical ever,
just one year behind the record holder Cats, which closed on
its 21st birthday (May 2002). In a recent poll on Radio 2 it was voted
the nation's favourite musical.
Now Stoppard Play for
Royal Court
According to Variety, Tom Stoppard is to write an as yet unnamed new
play for the Royal Court in June of next year. It is reported as having
twenty speaking parts and will be directed by Trevor Nunn. In 2006 the
theatre celebrates its fiftieth anniversary.
Cooney Farce to Close
Tom, Dick and Harry, the farce by Ray and Michael Cooney at the
Duke of York's which stars Joe, Stephen and Mark MsGann, is to close
early on 29th October. It opened on 23rd August to less than enthusiastic
reviews.
In September it extended its booking period by two months to 7th January,
2006.
The Mousetrap
Extends
The world's longest runnning play, Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap,
has extended its run at St Martin's Theatre until 1st July, 2006
Tall Stories for Christmas
at the Soho
This year's Christmas show at the Soho Theatre will be Tall Stories'
The Snow Dragon. It will run from 8th December to 8th January.
Billy is the kid. He has everything a young goat could need - and more
besides. When New Year's Eve approaches, Billy's parents tell him to
leave out berries for the legendary Snow Dragon so that it will bring
him even more goodies.
But collecting berries is hard work, and Billy finds it much easier
to 'borrow' from his friends. As a result, New Year doesn't turn out
quite how he expected...
Tall Stories' other current production, The Gruffalo, takes
up residence at the Hampstead Theatre from 20th December to 7th January.
Broadway One-Man Hit Comes to the West
End
I am My Own Wife by Doug Wright and starring Jefferson Mays,
which was an off-Broadway hit before transferring to Broadway's Lyceum
in 2003, where it ran for ten months and has since been touring, comes
to the West End in November.
Based on the story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite
who surivived both the Nazis and the Communists, and directed by Moises
Kaufman, it will open at the Duke of York's on 10th November (previews
from 4th) where it runs until 4th February.
