Soul Back on Stage
After the closure of Jerry Springer the Opera, David Soul is
to return to the music theatre stage at the Watermill in Newbury in
a revival of Mack and Mabel (Book by Michael Stewart; Music and
Lyrics by Jerry Herman; Revisions by Francine Pascal), which will run
from 18th May to 19th July.
Dealing with the relationship between film director Mack Sennet and
deli-delivery girl turned actress Mabel Normand, the production will
be directed by John Doyle with musical directionm by Sarah Travis, the
creative team behind a series of musical shows at the Berkshire venue,
all of which have transferred to the West End. They include Sweeney
Todd, Fiddler on the Roof and Piaf.
Best's Hedda
for the West End
The Almeida production of Ibsen's Hedda
Gabler, which stars Eve Best in the title role, will transfer
to the West End's Duke of York's Theatre next month, opening on 23rd
May (previews from 19th).
The production, which is both adapted and directed by Richard Eyre,
also features Lisa Dillon and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Another Hollywood West End Debut
Yet another Hollywood star is to make her debut on the West End stage
this year. Brook Shields will play a nine-week season as Roxie Hart
in Chicago, starting on 26th April.
Although best known for her film work, especially The Blue Lagoon,
she has considerable stage exprience on Broadway, wgere she has performed
in Grease, Cabaret, Exonerated and Wonderful
Town.
Another Producers Cast Change
As already announced, John Gordon Sinclair
will take over from Lee Evans as Leo Bloom in The
Producers on 25th April. He will be joined by American musical
theatre and television star Fred Applegate who will take over from Brad
Oscar as Max Bialystock on the same day.
Applegate has actually played the part before: he appeared as Max more
than 800 times during the show's run on Broadway.
Coltrane on Stage Again
Scots actor Robbie Coltrane is to return to the stage from 11th to 16th
April at Oran Mor in Glasgow's Kelvinside. He will appear in a play
in the venue's lunchtime programme - A Play, A Pie and A Pint - in The
Brother's Suit by Peter McDougall. Coltrane and McDougall are ckose
friends, but this is thuir first work together.
The show starts at 1.10pm and ends at 1.50, and tickets are £10.
The Big Life
Transfers
Paul Sirett's ska musical The Big Life, currently enjoying its
second successful run at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, will transfer
to the Apollo on 23rd May (previews from 11th). Initially it is booking
to 5th November.
