Mirren Is Best Actress
Helen Mirren has been voted Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival
for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, which deals
with the aftermath of Princess Diana's death. The film also won Best
Screenplay for writer Peter Morgan.
Accepting the award, Mirren said: "It's always terrifying seeing
your movie take its first steps, but its an incredible honour for our
film to take them at the Venice festival."
Just two weeks ago she received an Emmy for her portrayal of the first
Elizabeth
Gate's Woyzeck
for New York
The Gate's 2004 production of Georg Büchners Woyzeck
is to transfer to New York's St Anns Warehouse in November. Adapted
and directed by Daniel Kramer, its cast will include Edward Hogg as
Woyzeck with David Harewood as the Drum. Hogg appeared in the original
production.
A White Christmas This Year
A new stage version of Irving Berlin's film musical White Christmas
is coming to Plymouth and Southampton this year, starring Craig McLachlan,
Tim Flavin, Lorna Luft and Ken Kercheval. The book by David Ives and
Paul Blake is based on the original screenplay from the 1954 Paramount
film.
It will play at Plymouth's Theatre Royal from 18th November to 2nd
December anmd then transfers to thSouthamptons Mayflower Theatre
from 7 December to 28th January. There are possibilities of a nationwide
tour and a West End Christmas outing in the future, according to producer
Michael Rose.
Bourne's Swan Lake Returns
Matthew Bourne's all-male version of Swan Lake returns to Sadler's
Wells this Christmas. It will run from 14th December (preview on 13th)
to 21st January.
Les Mis
21st Birthday
Les Misérables will celebrate its 21st birthday on 8th
October and the BBC will record a special 75 minute concert version
with the current cast and the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Mermaid Theatre
on 15th september. The concert will be boradcast on Radio 2 on the actual
birthday, Sunday 8th October.
Extensions, Openings and Closures
The Mousetrap (St Martin's) has extended its current booking
period to 12th May, 2007. Also extending, by eleven months, is The
Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty's) until 15th December, 2007.
Billy Elliot (Victoria Palace) has extended to 27th October,
2007, and last of the original boys to play the part, Liam Mower, will
have his final performance on 3oth September, 2006.
Stones In His Pockets returns to the West End, at the Duchess
Theatre, during the week of 30th October. It will replace See How
They Run, which closes on 28th October.
