West End Improvements
Will Cost £90m
According to a report in "The Stage", modest but essential
improvements to West End theatres, costing just £2,000 a seat,
will total £90m, Stephen Waley-Cohen, president of SOLT (the Society
of London Theatre), has said. he points out that the cost of improvements
to the Royal Court amounted to £50,000a seat and to Birminham
Rep £11,000. The theatre owners, he said, cannot bear such costs
because profits are not in line with what investors require in terms
of a return on their money.
He also points out that the West End is "dirty and intimidating,
and transport is a problem."
