Of Mice and Men:
Cast Changes for Old Vic
The Birmingham Rep production of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men
is to return to London on 3rd February, booking at the Old Vic until
3rd April. It originally played a seven week season at the Savoy. Matthew
Kelly and George Costigan will be replaced by Joe McGann (Lennie) and
Andrew Schofield (George). There will also be other new cast members:
Oscar James, Sandra Reinton, Sean Baker, Stephen Casey and Nick Stringer.
Law May Play Branson
Jude Law may play entrepreneur Richard Branson in a film based on his
autobiography, Losing My Virginity. Other possible Bransons are
Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell. Branson is said top be enthusiastic about
the film but remarked that his wife had said thinks you ought to be
dead before they make a film about you.
Casting at the Donmar
Casting has been announced for two of the Donmar Warehouse's spring
productions. Ray Fearon and Kevin McNally will star in World Music by
Steve Waters (16th February to 13th March: previews from 12th February),
a joint production between the Donmar and the Sheffield Crucible. The
cast of Charlotte Jones' The Dark (23rd March to 24th April:
previews from 18 March) will be led by Sian Phillips.
Trouble at Scher Children's
Theatre
The chairman of the famous Anna Scher Children's Theatre, Stephen Dawson,
has been forced to resign after what he calls "abusive threats",
according to a report in The Independent. He was, he claims, forced
to step down after he was threatened when Ms Scher was refused her job
back after resigning from her teaching post of more than thirty years
when she was hospitalised for depression. The threats came, he claims,
from some of her supporters.
Modernised Lear
at Greenwich
Galleon Theatre Company is to present a modernised version of King
Lear at the Greenwich Playhouse from 20th January to 15th February.
This "reowrking" of the play is "set amongst a contemporary
British criminal fraternity. In a ruthless and unforgiving world, consumed
by corruption, power struggles, blazing sexuality and murder."
Gershwin Alone
The Duchess Theatre is the venue for the London premiere of Gershwin
Alone, a one-man show about George Gershwin, written and performed
by Hershey Felder, with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin.
It will run from 6th February to 17th April.
Gershwin Alone has toured extensively in the US, including a
run on Broadway at the Helen Hayes Theater in 2001.
Mamma Mia!
Expands
More productions of the ABBA-based hit musical Mamma Mia! are
to be launched during 2004. Currently playing in London, Australasia,
Japan, German, Holland and with five productions in North America, it
will soon be seen in the Seoul Arts Centre (Korean language production
opening on 25th January), the palladium Theatre in Stuttgart (July),
another European production (November), a Swedish version (Cirkus Theater,
Stockholm, in February 2005), and a yet another new production which
begins in Dublin on 9th September, moving to Edinburgh on 12 November,
and then touring Europe from January 2005.
Asbestos Closes Glasgow
Theatre
Glasgow's Mitchell Theatre has been temporarily closed down when a routine
survey by Glasgow City Council, the building's owners, discovered levels
of white asbestos which are "slightly above" sfatey limits.
Extending
The following have announced extended booking periods:
- His Dark Materials (RNT Olivier) extends by one week
- Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty's) is now booking to 1st
January 2005
