The Greatest Film Star?
Visitors to the Channel 4 website have been asked to vote for the person they consider to be the greatest film star, and the result? Al Pacino! The list from which the visitors voted was compiled by a panel of film-makers and critics. The top ten were:

1. Al Pacino; 2. Robert De Niro; 3. Tom Hanks; 4. Kevin Spacey; 5. Harrison Ford;
6. Jack Nicholson; 7. Anthony Hopkins; 8. Sean Connery; 9. Ewan McGregor; 10. Cary Grant

Three Sisters News
Kristin Scott Thomas and Douglas Hodge are to leave Michael Blakemore's production of Chekhov's Three Sisters at the Playhouse. They will be replaced on 20th May by Susannah Harker and Stephen Ballantyne, it was announced last week. The production is currently booking until 29th June.

Also announced last week is the casting for the National Theatre's production of the same play, which is due to open in August. Heading the cast in Katie Mitchell's production will be Eve Best, Anna Maxwell Martin and Lucy Whybrow.

New Ayckbourn Tour
A revival of Alan Ayckbourn's How the Other Half Loves began a national tour last week when it opened at the Theatre Royal, Windsor. Starring John Challis and Sue Holderness (Boycie and Marlene from Only Fools and Horses), the production will tour to Bromley, Newcastle, Norwich, Richmond, Glasgow, Woking, Northampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Southend, Plymouth, Ipswich, Malvern, Belfast and Leeds.

Lyric Starts £2.6m Improvements
Work has begun on improvements costing £2.6m at the Lyric Hammersmith. The work will include a new glass-fronted entrance, rehearsal room, education facility, café and bar. Although funding is in place for most of the work, £750,000 still needs to be found and the theatre is embarking ona fund-raising campaign. The work is due to be compleed by the end of the year.

Roger Moore Fitted with Pacemaker
Roger Moore has been fitted with a pacemaker after he collapsed onstage during a performance of The Play What I Wrote on Broadway. The 75 year old actor fainted onstage, experiencing breathing difficulties during a song and dance routine, and was taken to hospital. When he left hospital he was described as "feeling very well, but a little fragile."

Mukhamedov Joins Cooper in Musical
Former Bolshoi and Royal ballet principal dancer Irek Mukhamedov is to join Adam Cooper and his wife Sarah Wildor in Rodgers and Hart's On Your Toes at the Royal Festival Hall. The show opens on 7th August (previews from 4th) and is currently booking to 6th September.

Rocky Horror Return
Cult classic The Rocky Horror Show returns to London on 23rd June when it is to play a two week season at the Queen's.

Extensions and Closures

  • Tell Me On a Sunday, starring Denise Van Outen (Gielgud), has reduced its booking period by one week to 26th July, which suggests that it is probably to close then.
  • Strindberg's Dance of Death, starring Ian McKellen (Lyric, Shaftesbury Avenue), has extended by one week to 7th June, after which it will definitely close.
