Hair at the Gate
The Gate Theatre in Notting Hill is to revive the "tribal rock
musical" Hair in the autumn. but with not a hippy in sight.
The emphasis, we are told, will be on "modern chic", with
hairstyling by Vidal Sassoon. Directed by the theatre's associate director
Daniel Kramer, it opens on 22nd September (previess from 12th) and runs
until 8th October.
Teale Tackles the Brontës
Polly Teale writes and directs Brontë, her new play about
the Brontë sisters, for Shared Experience.
The short troubled lives of the Brontes have become one of the great
literary myths of all time. How was it possible that three women who
had never had sex, had probably never even been kissed, could write
some of the most erotic literature of all time? Why should these plain,
reclusive women, who lived in rural isolation, have invented such stories.
What was it in their lives that compelled them to write such passion
and power?
Teale's play will open at the Yvonne Arnaud in Guildford on 25th August
before going on to Leeds, Warwick, York, Oxford, Liverpool, the Lyric
Hammermith and Salford. Fenella Woolgar plays Charlotte, Diane Beck
Emily and Catherine Cusack Anne.

Kenwright, it is directed by Bob Thomson and designed by Paul Farnsworth.
The illusions are created by Paul Kieve, who does the special effects
for Harry Potter.

Hippodrome from 6th december to 21st January.

The Rose Will Open Next
Year
The Rose of Kingston, an £11m theatre which, although in a modern
building, will be based upon the Tose Theatre which was built in 1587,
will open next summer. An innovative approach by the Royal Borough of
Kingston upon Thames to establish a Property Company to attract substantial
investment to Rose of Kingston has proved successful. This funding alone
will not meet the total sum required to finish the theatre; however,
with this commitment in place, the Council is now taking action to ensure
the project moves forward and the theatre opens.
The director of the new theatre, Sir Peter Hall, said, "Rose of
Kingston is the most important part of my professional life and over
the coming months I will be working alongside my colleagues to put together
an acting company and a repertoire which will I hope will excite and
enthral our audiences. In tandem with this, the Theatre's unique relationship
with Kingston University will be cemented as together we launch a Master
of Fine Arts Degree in Classical Acting. This is the only course in
Britain where, once a student has qualified, he or she can gain direct
entry to a professional acting company."
