First Dark Materials
Casting Announced
The National Theatre has announed the first casting for the revial of
Philip Pulman's His Dark Materials in December. Mrs Coulter will
be played by Lesley Manville and Lord Asriel by David Harewood. The
revival opens on 8th December (previews from 20th November) and runs
until 8th April, 2005.
Shaw Reopens with Wilde
Euston's Shaw Theatre will reopen in October with Mike Read's musical
Oscar Wilde, based on the last six years of the writer's life.
The show opens on 19th October (previews from 13th) and is booking to
21st November. It coincides with the 150th anniversary of Wilde's birth.
The show was originally workshopped in 1994 and has since been substantially
rewritten by Read, who is responsible for book, lyrics and music.
The Shaw Theatre, the former home of the National Youth Theatre, is
now managed by Off West End Theatres, which runs Hampstead's New End
and the New Players in Charing Cross.

Be an Olivier Judge
The Society of London Theatre is making its annual appeal for theatergoers
to enlist as judges for the Olivier Awards. Eight judges are appointed
and they each receive tickets for all of the nominated productions throughout
the year. Then they sit down alongside the professional members of the
judging panel to make the final decision as to who wins the coveted
awards.
Anyone interested can apply using one of the leaflets displayed in
all West End theatre foyers, by sending a stamped addressed envelope
to SOLT -

Big Brother "Star" Lands Panto
Role
Geordie would-be glamour model Michelle Bass, whose exploits on the
TV series Big Brother earned her the nickname "Bunny Boiler",
is to play the Princess in Aladdin at the Alban Arena this Christmas.
Jon Conway, Executive Producer for Qdos, the company producing the
panto, said, "We are delighted that Michelle will be joining the
cast of Aladdin at The Alban Arena in December. There's no doubt
that Michelle made a huge impact during her time in 'the house' and
I am sure that audiences will enjoy watching her playing the part of
The Princess during the Festive Season."
