Cooper Brings Liaisons
to the Wells
The first production of dancer Adam Cooper's new company (Adam Cooper
Productions) will be a dance version of Laclos' Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
It will come to Sadler's Wells on 21st July and will run until 14th
August. No casting has been announced but in a tour of Japan, where
it had its world premiere in January, Madame de Tourvel was played by
Cooper's wife, Sarah Wildor, and Cooper himself played Valmont.
The production is co-directed and designed by Lez Brotherston. Cooper
co-directs and choreographs.
Adam Cooper gained worldwide recognition for his legendary performance
in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake, has choreographed and starred
in On your Toes (2003) and last summer's hit musical at Sadler's Wells,
Singin' in the Rain, and was nominated for an Olivier award this
year for his choreography of Grand Hotel at the Donmar Warehouse.
Brit Films Are Box
Office Hits
Box office takings of the top twenty British films increased by 45%
last year, reaching £176m. The list of the top twenty includes
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (top, taking £46m),
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (second, £36 million)
and Troy (third, £18 million). Also inlcuded in the list
were Shaun of the Dead and Alfie.
Bhatti Gets Award
for Behzti
Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, whose play Behzti had to be cancelled after
riots by Sikhs in Birmingham in December, has been awarded the Susan
Smith Blackburn Prize. The prize was created to encourage women playwrights,
draws entries mainly from the US, the UK and Ireland. It reflects the
values of Houston-born actress and writer Susan Smith Blackburn, who
lived her final 15 years in London and died in 1977.
New West End As
You Like It
Young Vic artistic director David Lan is to direct a new production
of Shakespeare's As You Like It at Wyndham's Theatre from 21st
June (previews from 3rd) to 3rd September. The production will star
Helen McCrory, Sienna Miller and Dominic West.
The RSC will also be producing the play this year. Directed by Dominic
Cooke and starring Lia Williams (Rosalind) and Amanda Harris (Celia),
it will open at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on 17th August (previews
from 5th) and runs until 13th October.
The Mousetrap
Extends
The world's longest running production, The Mousetrap, which
is now in its 53rd year, has announced another extension to its booking
period. It is now booking until 3rd December.
Jailhouse Rock
to Close
Jailhouse Rock, the Elvis Presley-based musical at the Piccadilly,
has posted closing notices. It will close on 23rd April and the planned
transfer to the Albery has been cancelled.
