Dench to Return to
the RSC
Dame Judi Dench is to return to the Royal Shakespeare company for the
first time since 1979, when she appeared in Cymbeline as Imogen.
It will be the first time she has ever appeared at the Swan.
She is to play Countess of Rosillion in All's Well That Ends Well
which opens at the Swan on 3rd December, running until 7th February
wheh it will transfer to London, although no venue has yet been announced.

The Countess is one of the very few women's parts in Shakespeare which
Dame Judi has not played before., as she points out: "The Countess
is one of the few Shakespearian women that I've never played and I'm
thrilled to be working with Greg Doran and being part of a big company
again."
She originally joined the RSC in 1961 and played with the company for
the next eighteen years.
The Redgraves at the
Theatre Museum
Just opened this week at the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden is The
Redgraves - A Family on the Public Stage, an exhibition celebrating
six generations of the Redgrave family, going back to Cornelius Redgrave,
a nineteenth century tobacconist, who sold tickets for Drury Lane and
Covent Garden from his Long Acre shop.
The exhibition is based on the archives of Sir Michael Redgrave which
the Museum bought for over £200,000. The exhibition is open from
10am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday. Admission is free.
Summer in the City
from ATG
The Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) has announced a special ticket promotion,
Summer in the City. Anyone buying tickets for three shows - Vincent
in Brixton (Playhouse), After Mrs Rochester (Duke of
York's) and A Midsummer
Night's Dream (Propeller at the Comedy) - will pay just £10
each. For patrons choosing just one of the plays, the ticket price will
be £20.
Alan Ayckbourn: 65,
Not Out
Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre is to premiere Alan Ayckbourn's
64th and 65th plays this summer. Comedy Sugar Daddies will run
from 17th July to 13th September, except for August, when his 65th,
the musical Orvin - Champion of Champions will run from 7th to
23rd. Ayckbourn will direct both plays.
Noises Off
Returns Yet Again
Noises Off is to return to the West End in August. It will again
be at the Piccadilly Theatre and will run from 4th August. Initially
it will be booking until 18th October. It is expected that the touring
cast - Cheryl Campbell, Paul Bradley, Philip Franks and Sylvester McCoy
- will perform. The national tour, which opened on 27th January, finishes
on 26th July.
The production, directed
by Jeremy Sams, opened at the National Theatre in October 2000, did
a short tour and then opened at the Piccadilly in May 2001 before transferring
to the Comedy in Fenruary 2002, closing in July of that year.
Henshall to Join Fosse
Tour
Ruthie Henshall is to join the cast of the international touring version
of Fosse on 24th November at the Manchester Opera House. The
show then goes to the Edinburgh Playhouse from 1st to 13th December.
Henshall is currently playing Velma Kelly in Chicago at the Strand,
but leaves the show on 6th September.
Hackney Revamp Grinds
to a Halt
The redevelopment of the Hackney Empire, now in its final phase, ground
to a halt last week when Sunley Terriff Construction, the construction
company overseeing the final stages, went into administration.
Campbell for Chicago?
According to the magazine Glamour, model Naomi Campbell, who
unsuccessfully attempted a singing career in the 90s, has been offered
a part in the Broadway production of Chicago.
Noddy Comes to Richmond
Enid Blyton's Noddy, one of the most popular children's book characters
ever, comes to the stage at the end of this month when Noddy and
the Magical Day, written and directed by Martin Waller, runs at
the Richmond Theatre from 31st July to 3rd August.
Hard Man Petruchio
TV's "hard man", ex-EastEnders actor Ross Kemp, is
to star in his first ever Shakespearean production in October when he
plays Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew at the Theatre Royal
Plymouth and on tour. The production runs from 2nd to 11th October (previews
from 29th September), before setting off on tour to Guildford, Norwich,
Brighton, Bradford, Malvern and Nottingham. Nichola McAuliffe plays
Katherine.
Hammerklavier
Comes to London
One of the successes of the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe, Yasmina Reza's Hammerklavier,
starring Susie Lindeman, will have its London premiere at the Jermyn
Street Theatre from 30th August to 2th7 September. An off-Broadway transfer
is planned for 2004.
Woman In White
Give an Airing This Weekend
Part of Andrew Lloyd Webber's newest musical, The Woman In White,
will be given a reading at this weeken's Sydmonton Festival. It is reported
that Lloyd Webber and Charlotte Jones (who is writing the book) have
compleetd the first act. Lyrics are by David Zippel and Trevor Nunn
directs.
West to Direct Baker
in G&S
Tomothy West is to direct Colin Baker (playing Sir Jospeh Porter) in
the Carl Rosa company's production of Gilbert and Sullivans HMS
Pinafore, which opens at the Malvern Festival Theatre on 22nd July
before touring to York, Darlington, Grimsby, Cardiff, Wycombe, Bromley,
Belfast, Stoke-on-Trent and Cork. Further dates for spring 2004 will
be announced soon.
Skinner to Play Stan
Laurel, Says Stage
According to a report in The Stage, comedian Frank Skinner is to star
as Stan Laurel in a new stage play by Tom McGrath, Laurel and Hardy.
The play is expected to open at the New End Theatre early next year.
GBS Revival for the
Tricycle
Dominic Dromgoole is to direct a revival of George Bernard Shaw's John
Bull's Other Island at Kilburn's Tricycle Theatre in the autumn.
Boyfriend
Tour Ends Prematurely
The touring production of Sandy Wilson's The Boyfriend, starring
Oliver Tobias, has been brought to a suddent end, just a week and two
performances before it was due to finish, because producers Merlin Musicals
has gone into liquidation. There were two performances to finish at
the Wycombe Swan and then the show was supposed to go to the Princess
in Torquay for the final week.
