Woman in White
Opening Confirmed
Andrew Lloyd Webber's newest musical, based on Wilkie Collins' novel,
will open at the West End's Palace Theatre in September 2004. It will
follow the eighteen year run of Les Miserables which will transfer
to the Queen's on 27th March.
The Woman in White, which has book and lyrics by Charlotte Jones
and David Zippel, will be directed by Trevor Nunn.
Shorter Closure for
His Majesty's
His Majesty's Theatre, Aberdeen, will be closed for five weeks less
than expected, when it undergoes a major refurbishment from March onwards.
It will therefore extend its spring season, after which it will move
to the Aberdeen University Hilton campus.
Journey's End
Opens in January...
RC Sheriff's Journey's End, set in the First World War, will
have a West End for the first time since its original production at
the Savoy, at the Comedy Theatre. It opens on 21st January (previews
from 15th) and is booking initially to 6th March. It will open exactly
75 years after its first performance.
The production will star David Haig and Paul Bradley.
...As Happy Days
Closes
Peter Hall's production of Beckett's Happy
Days, starring Felicity Kendall, will close two weeks early,
on 31st January.
Victor/Victoria
UK Premiere at Bridewell
Broadway musical Victor/Victoria will have its UK premiere at
London's Bridewell from 13th to 31st January (previews from 8th). Starring
Ria Jones, it will be directed by Phil Wilmott.
Importance
on Tour
Wendy Craig, Frank Middlemass and Josephine Tewson are to tour in a
new production of Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, directed
by Christopher Luscombe. It will open at the Theatre Royal, Brighton,
on 20th January, and will then go on to Woking, Darlington, Canterbury,
Bath, Milton Keynes and Richmond, with further dates to be announced.
Donovan to Stand in
for Wilmot
Former pop star Jason Donovan is to take over the part of Caractacus
Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for forty performances while
Gary Wilomt takes a break. His stint begins on 12th January.
Round the Horne
at the Venue
A stage version of the popular sixties radio show, Round the Horne,
is to open at The Venue in Leicester Square on 22nd January (previews
from 12th).
IMFT Back in 2005
The second International Festival of Musical Theatre will be held in
Cardiff in April 2005 snd one of its productions (not yet, of course,
announced) will be the first mainstream musical theatre show in the
new Wales Millennium Centre which opens in 2004. Alongside the Festival
will be another Global Search for New Musicals.
The Crucible
at the Crucible
A new production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, starring Douglas
Henshall and Lyndsey Marshal, will open at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre
on 10th February, running until 28th (previews from 4th). It will be
directed by the theatre's associate director Anna Mackmin and designed
by Liz Bretherton.
