Blanchett, Law, Owen
and Portman Getting Closer
Cate Blanchett, Jude Law, Clive Owen and Natalie Portman are to star
in a film version of Patrick Marber's 1997 RNT hit Closer, which
won the 1997 Time Out Award for Best Play in the West End, the 1997
Evening Standard Best Comedy Award, the 1997 Critics' Circle Best Play
Award and the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. It opened
at the Cottesloe in 1997, then moved to the Lyttelton, then to the West
End and on to Broadway.
Pinter Novel On-Stage
Harold Pinter's novel The Dwarfs is to be adapted and produced
by Kilburn's Tricycle Theatre. The adaptation is being done by Kerry
Lee Crabbe and the director will be Christopher Morahan. More details
will be announced nearer the play's premiere in April.
Brandon to Play Springer
Michael Brandon, best known in the UK for playing "bad cop"
Lieutenant James Dempsey to Glynis Barber's "good cop" in
the 1980s TV series Dempsey and Makepeace, will play the lead
in the National's production of Jerry Springer - The Opera in
April.
Grimm Fantasies
Postponed
The UK premiere of John Michael Heuer's Grimm Fantasies, due
to open at the King's Head on 30th March, has been postponed because
director Timothy Childs has been double-booked and has had to return
to the US to meet commitments there. No firm date for the production
has been fixed, although it is now expected later this year.
Grantham Takes Over
from Faith
From tomorow (Monday 17th March). Leslie Grantham will replace Adam
Faith, who died last weekend, in the tour of Love and Marriage.
Since Faith's suddent death, the part has been played by his understudy
Kevin O'Donahoe.
Caligula
Casting Announced
The cast of Michael Grandage's production of Caligula by Albert
Camus at the Donmar Warehouse (30th April to 14th June, preiews from
24th April) will include Michael Sheen (Caligula), Raymond Coulthard
(Cherea), Jason Hughes (Helicon), Diana Kent ( Caesonia ), Ben Turner
(Scipio), Jeff Diamond (Mucius), Bernard Gallagher (Cassius), Olivia
Macdonald (Mucius's wife), Jerome Willis (Octavius ). Scottish playwright
David Greig is the translator.
Reilly Joins Sexual
Perversity Cast
Kelly Reilly will be the the fourth of the principals in the forthcoming
West End revival of David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago
at the Comedy Theatre (opening 14th May, previews from 3rd).
Zeta Jones and Day
Lewis Win SAG Awards
Catherine Zeta Jones and Daniel Day Lewis have both received top awards
from the Screen Actors' Guild. Zeta Jones won the award for Best Supporting
Actress (in Chicago) and Day Lewis Best Actor (for Gangs of
New York). Zeta Jones' co-star in Chicago, Renee Zellweger,
won best actress and the film won Best Ensemble.
Cotton, Engel and
David Join Fiennes for Brand
Oliver Cotton, Susan Engel and Alan David are to co-star with Ralph
Fiennes in the RSC production of Ibsen's Brand, which runs at
the Swan, Stratford, from 17th April to 24th May 2003, and then transfers
to the Theatre Royal Haymarket 4th June to 30th August (previews from
29th May).
New Venue to Host
Warcrime
Theatre Underground, a new theatrical venue in the crypt of St Andrew's
Church in Holborn, is to play host to David William's play Warcrime,
in which the pilot who launched a c;uster-bom which hits the wrong target
comes face to face with ne of the civilian victims, a waitress. The
play runs from 24th March to 19th April.
Until recently the crypt was filled with rubble from a World War II
firebombing.
Triple Espresso
Closes
American comedy Triple Espresso (Arts Theatre) closed last night
(15th March), three weeks early. The closure was only announced at the
beginning of the week.
