Kevin Spacey

Short Run in Philadelphia for Spacey
Kevin Spacey will only play for seven of the twelve weeks of The Philadelphia Story's run at the Old Vic. The production runs from 7th May to 23rd July but Spavey will only perform until 18th June because of filming commitments. He will be played Lex Luthor in Superman Returns.

Other casting has been announced for The Philadelphia Story. Joining Spacey and Jennifer Ehle will be Julia McKenzie, Oliver Cotton, Nicholas Le Prevost and Lauren ward, along with two newcomers to the West Endm Damian Matthews and Talulah Riley.

No announcement has yet been made about who will take over from Spacey, nor about who will play the Jimmy Stewart part, journalist Mike Connor.

Smiths' Music to Form the Basis of a New Musical
Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others is the title of a new piece of music theatre which uses the music of The Smiths as its base. Conceived by Andrew Wale and Perrin Manzer Allen (Anonymous Society), it features four female singers and two male actors, accompanied by a string quartet and synthesised music. It is not, the writers stress, a "back catalogue" musical, but an "expressionist piece of pure theatre."

It will run from 5th to 23rd July (previews from 1st) at the Lyric Hammersmith.

Kwame Kwei-Armah

Elmina Returns to London
Kwame Kwei-Armah’s Elmina's Kitchen, which began life at the National Theatre and is currently on a national tour, is to transfer into the West End when the tour ends. It will be at the Garrick Theatre from 26th April (previews from 20th).

The production also stars Donna Croll and Don Warrington.

Alan Bennett Nicholas Hytner

History Boys Film Disagreement
Nicholas Hytner and Alan Bennett are insisting that the full National Theatre cast should be in the proposed film of Bennett's The History Boys, or the film will not be made. It is understood that, as when the film of Hytner's production of Bennett's The Madness of George III was made (with the title changed for the sake of the American audience who, the producers felt, would not understand that it meant King George III), the producers want to use what they consider to be more "bankable" Hollywood stars.
