Coliseum
Reopens, but without Nixon
The London Coliseum, home of English National Opera, reopened on 21st
February, a fortnight later than planned and without the planned revival
of Nixon in China. Instead the first production will be The
Rhinegold, which will be followed by The Valkyrie in May,
Siegfried in November and Twilight of the Gods in spring
2005. While the theatre was being refurbished, ENO has been performing
at the Barbican.
Whistling Psyche
to Premiere at Almeida
The Almeida is to premiere Sebastian Barry's new play Whistling Psyche,
about a meeting between Florence Nightingale and Dr Barry, in May. Directed
by Robert Delamere, it will open on 12th May, previewing from 7th.
The Theatre has also announced its Almeida Opera season, which will
run from 1st to 18th July. In the programme are the London premiere
of Harrison Birtwhistles The IO Passion, Man And Boy:
Dada by Michael Nyman, another London premiere, and the world premiere
of a new song cycle by John Woolrich, Almeida Operas Concert Director.
Crimp Premiere at Young
Vic
Martin Crimp's latest play, Cruel and Tender, is to premiere
at the Young Vic in May. Based on Sophocles' Trachiniae, the
new play, which stars Kerry Fox, opens on 13th May (previews from 5th).
The Mousetrap
Extends
The world's longest running play, The Mousetrap (St Martin's
Theatre), has extended to 27th November.
