The Price
Returns pre-West End
The revival of Arthur Miller's 1968 play The Price is to return
to the Tricycle in Kilburn in August, before transferring to the West
End on 11th September. The production will feature the original cast
from last year's revival - Warren Mitchell, Larry Lamb, Des McAleer
and Sian Thomas. It is at the Tricycle from 13th August to 6th September.
No venue for the West End run has yet been announced.
Kent Brings Japanese
Hamlet to the Wells
Former Almeida director Jonathan Kent's all-male Japanese language production
of Hamlet will visit Sadler's Wells for a nine day run from 29th
August to 6th September.
Hamlet will be played by leading Japanese actor Nomura Mansai. The
play was originally presented to great acclaim at the Setagaya Public
Theatre in Tokyo. The play will be performed with English surtitles.
Vincent Returns
Nicholas Wright's Vincent in Brixton, directed by Richard Eyre,
returns to London next month for a three month season at the Playhouse
from 10th July, before setting off on a nationwide tour in the autumn.
Although the play gathered numerous awards in the UK, the Broadway production
closed after just two months.
Madame Bovary
at Hammersmith
Shared Experience are to present Flaubert's Madame Bovary, in
a new version by Fay Weldon, at the Lyric Hammersmith in November.
Lipman Joins Millie
Maureen Lipman is to join the cast of the London premiere of Thoroughly
Modern Millie which opens at the Shaftesbury on 21st October (previews
from 11th).
In the same theatre this week, the revival of Calamity Jane,
starring Toyah Willcox, which has just finished a national tour, will
open on 26th June. It will run until 20th September.
Barber to Travel as
Mrs Robinson
Glynis Barber will play Mrs Robinson in the national tour of The
Graduate which opens at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge on 27th August.
At around the same time a production starring Jerry Hall will travel
to the USA, opening in San Francisco. She will be succeeded later in
the run by Linda Gray and Sopranos star Lorraine Bracco.
Laura Sadler Dies
Actress Laura Sadler (Sandy Harper in the BBC1 drama series Holby
City) has died five days after a 40 foot fall from the balcony of
her boyfriend's flat in Holland Park, in which she sustained serious
head injuries. Her boyfriend George Calil, who plays her on-screen boyfriend
Sean Hunt in the series, was arrested and questioned on Sunday after
the incident, and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
The BBC has announced that it will still screen the eight completed
episodes of the series in which she appears, at the request of her family.
Our House
to Close
Our House, the musical based on the music of ska band Madness,
is to close on 16th August after a run of ten months at the Cambridge
Theatre. Although it won the Best New Musical award in the Oliviers
earlier this year, ticket sales have been poor, which the producers
blame on the post-September 11th tourist slump. Just a month ago, the
show announced a new booking period to 10th January, 2004.
New Clements Thriller
at Richmond
Prolific thriller writer Brian Clements has a new play opening
at Richmond on 7th July. Edge of Darkness will star Liza Goddard , Clare
McGlinn (Coronation Street) and Toby Scannell (The Bill)
and will run until 12th.
Extending
- Mamma Mia! has extended by two months at the Price Edward,
now booking to 22nd May, after which it will transfer to the Prince
of Wales.
- Bombay Dreams, which celebrated its first birthday at the
Apollo Victoria on 19th June, has extended until 28th March, 2004.
- The Madness of George Dubya has announced that it has extebnded
its booking period and will finally close on 23rd August.
