Lancashire to Join
Guys and Dolls
Sarah Lancashire, best known for her perfromance as Raquel in Coronation
Street, is to join the cast of Guys and Dolls (Piccadilly).
She will take over the role of Miss Adelaide from Ally McBeal
Jane Krakowski on 5th December.
On the same date, another - as yet unnamed - star will take over as
Sky Masterson from Ewan McGregor.
Glorious
in the West End in October
Glorious, the new comedy about the "dire diva of din",
Florence Foster Jenkins, by Peter Quilter will transfer into the West
End in the autumn, although no date or theatre has yet been announced.
Jenkins was an American socialite who hired major venues to give concerts
although she had absolutely no talent as a singer.
Starring Maureen Lipman, the play opens at Birmingham Rep in September
before going on a short national tour.
Cathy Come Home
"Changed the World"
The 1966 BBC1 Wednesday Play Cathy Come Home has been selected
as the TV programme that most "changed the world" by Broadcast
magazine. "Rarely has a single drama had such a powerful effect
on the nation, forcing the issue of homelessness into the public consciousness
and provoking outrage at the state of housing in Britain," it said.
Iraq/UK West End Collaboration
A unique collaboration between Iraqi and British theatre will come to
the West End in January next year. Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale,
in an Arabic/English translation by Abdul Karim Kasid, Rebecca Lenkiewicz
and Jeremy Sams, will be produced by the Motion Group and the National
Theatre of Iraq, premiering in Baghdad in the autumn and touring to
Paris and New York as well as the West End. It will be directed by Andrew
Steggall and conducted by Robin ONeill.
No dates or venue have yet been announced.
Celebrating Sondheim
The West End will celebrate Stephen Sondheim's 75th birthday with a
charity gala in aid of ChildLine at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on
Sunday 23rd October. Taking part will be Rosemary Ashe, John Barrowman,
Stephen Carlile, Clive Carter, Gemma Craven, Anton de Beke, James Dreyfus,
Daniel Evans, Tim Flavin, Rosemary Ford, Roy Hudd, Laura Michelle Kelly,
Paul Killick, Eartha Kitt, Beverly Klein, Bonnie Langford, Julian Ovenden,
Stephen Page, Nicholas Parsons, Wendi Peters, Sian Phillips, Joan Savage,
Imelda Staunton, Claire Sweeney and Sally Ann Triplett.
The central feature of the show, called Children Will Listen,
will be the UK premiere of the songs from Sondheim's latest musical,
Bounce, which had its world premiere in Chicago in 2003.
Tickets start at £20 and rise to £120 (which includes a
champagne reception).
The Producers
in the Black
The West End production of The Producers has recouped its £5.5m
costs, having been seen by 550,000 people since it opened and taking
£20m at the box office. It is currently booking until 1st April
2006.
Otherwise Engaged
at the Criterion
Simon Curtis is to direct and Richard E Grant to star in a revival of
Simon Gray's 1975 comedy Otherwise Engaged at the Criterion in
October (opening on 31st after previews from 25th). The West End opening
will be preceded by a four venue tour, opening at the Theatre Royal
Bath on 21st September, and going on to Oxford, Milton Keynes and Woking.
The original award-winning production starred Alan Bates, Nigel Hawthorne,
Julian Glover and Ian Charleson.
Extending/Closing
The Postman Always Rings Twice
(Playhouse) has extended until 10th September and The
Far Pavilions (Shaftesbury) until 14th January, while The
Shaughraun (Albery) has announced it will close on 30th July.
It was booking until 24th September.
