Dreyfuss Leaves
Producers Cast
Richard Dreyfuss has been forced to withdraw from the cast of The
Producers, which opens next month at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane,
because of injury. He had an operation on his back for a herniated disc
in January and also has a recurring shoulder injury.
A statement from the producers of the show said, "It has become
increasingly difficult for Mr Dreyfuss to fulfil the rigours of the
role, and it is with regret that both parties have had to make this
decision."
The 56-year old actor has been replaced by Nathan Lane who played the
part on Broadway and won a Tony for his performance. His tenure is advertised
as being "temporary", until 8th January.
Jackson and Stewart
in the West End
Dawson's Creek star Joshua Jackson is to join Patrick Stewart
in the cast of Mamet's A Life in The Theatre which opens at the
Apollo in January. This will be the first time he has been onstage since
the age of eight and he admits to being "slightly nerve-wracked".
The Lion King
Is Five
The West End production of Disney's The Lion King celebrated
its fifth birthday last week. It opened at the Lyceum on 19th October,
1999, and is now booking to 1st July, 2005.
McGregor for Guys
and Dolls?
Next year could see Ewan McGregor returning to the West End stage in
his first live singing role - he did sing, of course, in the film Moulin
Rouge. It is reported that discussions are in the final stages for
him to play Sky Masterson in a new production of Guys and Dolls
by the Donmar's Michael Grandage.
McGregor's last West End outing was in 1999 when he appeared in Little
Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs at the Comedy.
Keith in Coward at the Savoy
Penelope Keith is star in Coward's Blithe Spirit at the Savoy
Theatre from 22nd November (previews from 16th). Also in the cast are
Joanna Riding, Amanda Drew and Aden Gillet. The production, directed
by Thea Sharrock, was first seen as part of the Peter Hall rep season
at the Theatre Royal, Bath, earlier this year.
Riverdance
on Tour
The Irish dance show, Riverdance, is to embark on what is being
called it final tour in February next year. It will open at the Edinburgh
Playhouse on14th February, before going on to Glasgow, newcastle, Manchester,
Sheffield, Nottinham, Cardiff, Blackpool, London and, finally, Birmingham.
Les Mis at Windsor
The cast of Les Miserables are to give a special performance
at Windsor Castle next month before the Queen and the French President
Jacques Chirac. The performance, on 18th November, will be in celebration
of the centenary of the Entente Cordiale. The performance also
celebrates te start of the show's twentieth year in the West End.
The normal performance on that evening will be brought forward to 6.15.
Cuckoo's Nest
Extends
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Gielgud) has extended to 1st
January.
