Sheffield Tempest for the Old Vic
Michael Grandage's Sheffield Crucible production of The Tempest, starring Sir Derek Jacobi as Prospero, is to transfer to the Old Vic for a two month run from 13th January to 15th February, 2002.

Playhouse Sold
London's slightly-off-the-beaten-track Playhouse Theatre has been sold. Its new owners are American producers Ted and Norman Tulchin, and Kevin Wallace has been appointed as general manager.

McKellen Returns to the West End
Sir Ian McKellen will return to the West End next year after a five year absence whenhis Broadway production of Strindberg's Dance of Death opens at the Lyric on 4th March (previews from 20th February). Frances de la Tour will replace Helen Mirren who played in the Broadway production.

Fiennes in RSC Brand
Ralph Fienns is to star in the Royal Shakespeare Company's prodction of Ibsen's Brand which is to play at the Swan and then transfer to the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, on 4th June. This will be Fiennes' first performance with the RSC for thirteen years.

Mr Goldwyn Comes to London next Spring
Mr Goldwyn, the comedy drama about film producer Samuel Goldwyn which is cuurently playing on Broadway, is to open in the West End in the spring of 2003, although no venue or dates have yet been fixed. The star of the Broadway production, Alan King, will also appear in the London production.

Tommy Cooper Play to Tour Before West End
Cooper! Not Like That! Like This!, a new play about comedian Tommy Cooper, written by John Fisher, is to have a short tour in March next year before opening in the West End at a yet unnamed venue on 8th April (previews from 2nd).

Directed by Simon Callow, with choreography by Lionel Blair and magic tricks by Geoffrey Durham, the play will star Jerome Flynn. It will visit Malvern, Oxford and Plymouth before the London opening.

Minogue by Royal Request
Singer Kylie Minogue appeared as a guest artiste in The Play What I Wrote on Thursday 21st November at the request of Prince Charles. As the performance was in aid of the Prince of Wales' charity the Prince's Trust, he was invited to submit a list of names of those whom he would like to see as the special guest in the show. His first choice was the Australian singer and former Neighbours actress: she was free and was delighted to take part.

Lihe the Morecambe and Wise shows on which it is based, the play features a special guest artiste for each performance.

Eden to Close Early
Eugene O'Brien's Eden is to close a month early, on December 14th instead of 11th January.

Tyzack Joins Davies in Auntie
Margaret Tyzack will join Alan Davies in the West End production of his Edinburgh Fringe hit Auntie and Me at Wyndham's (previewing from 8th and opening on 14th January). Marcia Warren co-starred in Edinburgh but she is committed to the revival of Arsenic and Old Lace, which opens at the Strand on 14th February).

Sleuth Cast to Change
Ian Ogilvy and Jonathan Kerrigan are to take over from Peter Bowles and Gray O’Brien in the revival of Peter Shaffer's Sleuth at the Apollo. They will play from 2nd December to 8th February.

Extending
David Hare's The Breath of Life, starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, which was due to end its run at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, on 21st December, will now reopen in the same venue on 1st January.

Chicago has extended its booking period until 27th September 2003, and Umoja will now run until 20th December 2003.
